Balún • [New York, NY, USA]

Balún is an electro-acoustic pop outfit whose sound and influences can most easily be spotted in bands like Ulrich Schnauss, the Icelandic group Múm and Scottish wizards Boards of Canada. Their sound is one of soft and sweet rhythmic sound collages- simple guitar riffs, subdued glitchy beats and sounds of bells, strings and accordian accompanied by Angelica’s child-like dreamy singing. Her singing is reminiscent of the type of quiet, low voiced song a child absent mindedly sings to herself while engrossed in drawing or making a princess’ crown out of field flowers. The product of the soundscapes created by Balún is one of nostalgia, or better yet, daydreaming. It’s music to listen to when you’ve realized you’ve wandered into an unfamiliar place but you don’t mind that you’re lost.

Low-Gain • [St. Paul, MN, USA]

A pianist with 7 years of classical training under his fingertips, in 1998 Logan Erickson (before being known the world over as Low-Gain) embarked on a personal mission to give inspiration and hope to all kids with an old Casio keyboard and some solder, to give them the skills they need forge fresh compositions with nothing but creativity and the science of circuit bending. Founder of the internet group Benders Anonymous and an integral voice of the Midwest Bent Festival, Low-Gain also took a three year hiatus from the chip-tune scene to focus on the science his craft, working as a recording engineer and studio technician, before rejoining the chip-tune movement in 2006.

Rather than relying solely on his established circuit bending skills to make a new album, Low-Gain has said, "At the moment LSDJ is my drug of choice. That’s what the album is centered around." Never content limiting himself to just one means of creating music, Low-Gain, part inventor, part rebel, part rebel-inventor, is always searching for new ways to make chip tunes interesting.

minusbaby • [New York, NY, USA]

Since 1999, he has come to prominence in the chip music scene with a foundation in New York City and the 8bitpeoples, of which he is a longtime member. Inspired by a recent residency in Brazil, minusbaby recouped his technique and scope to prepare and produce a new mission: the propagation of a unique brand of chip music largely informed by 1960s samba and boogaloo, 1970s Krautrock and Música Popular Brasileira, 1980s No Wave, hip-hop and electro, and 1990s shoegaze and post-techno. Always keen on collaboration, he is currently working with Def Jux Records' turntablist, DJ Big Wiz [Aesop Rock, El-P, Mr. Lif], Trackmasters producer, The ARE [Lil’ Kim, De La Soul, K-Otix] and a newfound interest in video performance.

Candie Hank:

"Born in a Themepark near Belgium and helping out mother with making music for her palmreading sessions, I got trained in using electronic tools in the tender times of my childhood. Strict but chaotic my education passed by on me and I started to earn my first money on celebrations in the towns nearby. Playing on funerals, baptisings or weddings I made friends with melodies and after a good look into balkan and gypsy music, life led me to labels from UK, USA, France and Germany."

Cheap Dinosaurs:

Cheap Dinosaurs is a construction of music by Dino Lionetti which involves live synthesizer performance and Gameboy programming on Philadelphia's public transportation system. Blending complex rhythms and catchy melodies, the music is meant to provoke unique patterns of body motion. Dino has previously played and written for the now defunct band Chromelodeon, is a regular collaborator with bands of a wide range of musical style, and currently plays electric piano in The Private Sea.

Disasterpeace:

"Disasterpeace (Rich Vreeland) is an American musician and composer originally from the Staten Island section of New York City. He draws heavily from the influences of his favorite musicians and composers and the audio aesthetic of the retrospective to create instrumental music that varies in scope, structure, tonality, meter, timbre and theme."

Graffiti Monsters

"Mark DeNardo writes 8-bit punk songs under the band Graffiti Monsters, fusing ancient and modern mythology in the noise/folk/punk/blues idiom. With drummer Jeremy Wolfe Kivett, Graffiti Monsters has been making friends and playing shows in the New York punk circuit, the 8-bitpeoples/collectives, and Brooklyn noise scene since the start of 2008."

No Carrier:

"No Carrier is Don Miller. Influenced by years of staring at computer and TV screens, he creates 8-bit visuals on the NES for chiptune and video game music events. His custom programmed cartridges light up stages with fast-paced low resolution graphics. He performs live using NES hardware, manually beat matching and improvising on the spot."

Voltage Controlled:

"Paris uses his own custom software to turn hand held game systems such as the gp2x and gameboy advance into visual performance instruments."
