Ppulsewave-jun_08.gif Pulsewave 06/28/2008 The Tank 279 Church St. (Between Franklin & White Streets) Doors at 9:00pm, Show at 9:30pm New York's only monthly chiptune series return with a vengeance this June. Here to rescue one and all from this smothering heat wave is the cool, refreshing, and captivating BUBBLYFISH. Yes, I too felt a cool rush on my sunburnt skin just from hearing her shimmering name. For those in New York not smart enough to wear sunscreen in this blazing sunshine, Bubblyfish's tracks composed on Nanoloop are sure to relieve and revive. Until then, try some Aloe Vera to hold you over. Venturing in all the way from Montreal, abandoning the (slightly) milder climate of the St. Lawrence river, and wielding bottles of SPF 45 are ALICEFFEKT and TAXI NOUVEAU. These two are spearheading an unprecedented Canadian showing at Pulsewave--"Faster, Higher, Braver"? Only at Pulsewave. Last but in no way least, New Jersey's very own DISASSEMBLER emerges from the steamy caverns of Port Authority to complete the frosty lineup that is much needed this month at the Tank. NO CARRIER and NOTENDO each claim one of your eye-balls in a flurry of visuals so cool, you'll feel hot again. Temperatures outside are rising, rising, rising but at Pulsewave, it is a frosty freeze... minusbaby

minusbaby, born Richard Alexander Caraballo in New York City, is a musician, designer, photographer, and wandering, beat-collecting international vagabond, whose finely-crafted blips and bleeps are as eclectic as the broad range of music and culture he draws inspiration from. Focusing primarily on software-based composition, minusbaby uses lo-fi electronic synthesis to create chip music that defies genre classification. One song could be a micromusic lullaby inspired by 17th Century Spanish architecture, while the next may be reggaeton for a cymbal-clapping robotic monkey, composed with an ear for fine hip-hop beats and debuted for an Australian Cattle Dog in São Paulo, Brazil. With minusbaby, '60s—'70s Brazilian pop can meet mid-'80s New York b-boy jams cut with Santería percussive patterns, everything filtered through the ears and fingers of a musician looking to push what chip music can display stylistically, and what people will experience when they hear it themselves.

Balún

Hola a todos. At first, we were an electronic duo in 2002 and the name was Balloon, and we all lived in Puerto Rico. Then we became an electro-acoustic trio in 2004 and we became Balún. By 2007 we became officially a quartet and lived in other countries. We like dreamy music that's why most of the time we would like to be sleeping. We recorded and self-released some songs for everybody in 2003 and 2004, and that was good. Some people, well specifically Robert Balun, have told us that our songs made them sleepy. Success! We would like to play in other countries and that's why we want to buy a plane. We also play in other different bands. Two of them are called Arturo en el Barco and Los Nervios. They are really nice too. If you would like to download our music you can visit the netlabel Observatory, there's a free EP called "While Sleeping" we made for you during our sleep in summer of 2004, and with love! Our first album, titled "Something Comes Our Way" was released on 2006 by the Chicago-based label Brilliante Records! Our EP Collection was re-released last year by the NYC label Expansion Team. In 2007 we also released new songs on compilations by netlabels Petite & Jolie (France) and Aerotone (Germany). Check them out!

Blue Screen Love Scene

Long-term friends, Richy Ferrell and Matt Sapp, decided one day that they wanted to form an electronic band as a fun side project. Richy, (having previous experience as a guitarist), and Matt, (known around Athens, GA as a bass player) just needed one final thing: a singer. Lauren, a friend of Richy's, (and co-member of Teenwich), was introduced as a vocalist and soon after, the three quickly became an Electro-pop trio with one goal in sight: to make music that the kids would want to dance to.

An epic lineup all in one night!

New York: Bubblyfish, Bit Shifter, Nullsleep, Glomag
Philadelphia: Animal Style, Cheap Dinosaurs

With visuals by: noteNdo!

BUBBLYFISH: Haeyoung Kim relocated to the US from Korea in 1992. With a background in classical piano, she explores the territory of sounds and the cultural representation. Currently, under the name Bubblyfish, she has been creating "lo-fi" 8-bit sound works and minimal electronic compositions. Based in NYC, Haeyoung has worked as composer, sound designer, and audio engineer. Haeyoung's work has been presented in various art venues, clubs, festivals, and galleries including The American Museum of the Moving Image, Eyebeam, New Museum, Lincoln Center Walter Reed Theater, and also heard on "Spinning On Air", WNYC Radio as well as Spongefork Radio on the web.

BIT SHIFTER explores high-energy, low-bit music composed and performed on a Nintendo Game Boy. The result is an unapologetically fun foray into an evocative and distinctive soundset traditionally reserved for video game sound effects and background music, all done on a console generally misperceived as being technically limited. Made possible by Oliver
Wittchow and Johan Kotlinski's respective home-brew Game Boy musicmaking programs Nanoloop and Little Sound DJ, Bit Shifter's music adopts and subverts the playfulness inherent in the familiar Game Boy soundset, repurposing it into the service of novel idioms.

NULLSLEEP is Jeremiah Johnson. Nullsleep uses Game Boys and NES consoles to create conceptually unique music that blends subversive hardware hacking with powerful melodic pop. In 1999, together with friend Mike Hanlon from Detroit, he cofounded the 8bitpeoples: a collective of artists interested in the audio/video aesthetics of early computers and videogames. In the time since, Nullsleep has released a number of recordings through 8bitpeoples, his most recent work focusing on music created with the Nintendo Game Boy and Nintendo Entertainment System platforms. His constant push for new ways to force the most out of yesterday's machines and the unparalleled romantic chiptune intensity embodied in his music have gained him notice worldwide. Whether thrashing away on a keyboard hooked up to a Game Boy like an electric guitar or rocking hacked NES cartridges, Nullsleep consistently demonstrates his passion for pushing the limits of both the hardware and the heart.

GLOMAG makes 8 Bit music using Nintendo gameboys. He has performed live in the US and Europe and has several releases available, including the recent Astralwerks CD of Kraftwerk covers, "8 Bit Operators", which features his version of "Pocket Calculator". He has been featured in articles in Wired Magazine and Art Forum and his music is a major part of the award winning internet series "This Spartan Life" which he also writes and directs.

ANIMAL STYLE: Joey Mariano has been making electronic music since the year 2000. Trained as a jazz guitarist, Joey first gained critical acclaim with his band Rerun. Recently, under the alias Animal Style, he has been writing chiptune music on programs like Nanoloop, LSDJ, and famitracker. Creator of the GBC foot adaptor, he continues to innovate the live performance of chiptune music through improvisation and creativity.

CHEAP DINOSAURS: Dino, a veteran of the indie rock scene, first gained recognition as a chiptune virtuoso with his his band Chromelodeon - integrating chrunchy melodies, huge orchestration, and gameboy tracker music. Recently, his projects include the video game cover band Sprite Slowdown. Want to hear ripping keyboards? Want to hear the most ridiculous gameboy tracker programming? Listen to Dino's solo work~! Let cheap dinosaurs invade your file permissions.

Jeff Donaldson (noteNdo) uses modified video game consoles to produce live visuals. You may have seen him as the theoretical house VJ for Pulsewave or maybe at Craptops vs. Laptops? In the words of Avant-Pop Pocket, "It is unanticipated art, don't you think?" Jeff also plays in Wzt Hearts and makes lots of noise.
